Creativity
So this computer I was given, the one I am planning on making a kickass Ubuntu machine, didn’t come with a hard drive. That’s fine, I figured I would put in this extra one I had…except the fools that took it out also took out all of the mounting hardware. And since it is a small-footprint PC, everything is proprietary and weird…laptop parts are too small and PC parts are too big. None of the mounting hardware I had for regular desktop PCs would work.
The rubberband solution seems to work okay, though.
Update Feb. 2008: Rubberbands still holding up just fine.

Man, this is how I nearly did to get my Samsung drive fresh air... :-\
But as /J said, I used at least four screws and some metal to extend my mounting hardware, full with a hardware and two optical drives. ;)

/J: yeah, I know...but short of doing a lot of drilling and/or metal fabrication I can't think of anything else :(

Hey this is why plastic wire ties were invented. You know the one you buy at the hardware store. If they don't have ones long enough use 2 end to end.

When I find myself in a situation such as this I always go for Zip-Ties!! Hell half the shit in my house is held together with zip-ties!! I know I've mounted a few hard drives with them before especially in the old style Dell Dimension cases which had a weird plastic mount with special 2 inch screws!!! I always lost the special screws and would end up zip-tying the drive to the plastic mount!! Anyway if you're buidling an Ubuntu machine you want to it be creative so I think the rubberbands do just that!!!

So how have the rubber bands been holding up? I'd be concerned that the heat generated by the HD would eventually melt them....
As per the pirate person - I would consider replacing them with zipties.
WTF is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a Linux distro based on Debian.

LOL, sounds scary.
Linux - is this like the Lindows PCs that they were selling at Wal-Mart a few years back? I think they called them "Lindows" and they got sued and had to change the name?
Thanks for the info.

Problem with rubberbands that they age, and can do so quickly. So you might find yourself having that harddrive shorting out all your precious hardware one day... ;)
