That's interesting...I had read somewhere that the town started dying as early as the 50s (but I wasn't there!). I have much admiration for the place, particularly the buildings. Thanks for all the background. It's an impressive place still. You sound like you might be interested in the Schuylkill County group my sister and I started (she lives there) :)

Back many years ago Downtown Pottsville was THE PLACE for shopping - many famous people went there...it was the FAB!!! The Necho Allen Hotel was also "The Place" many stars stayed there. It is now gone but it was not so very long ago it was still open. My father worked there as a bus boy for banquets and restaurant. He hated it - the man in charge nevre split the tips. This was in the early 40's. I was a lucky girl because I caught the tail end of all of this Pottsville Glory ...I was born in 1960 and remember walking downtown and the streets were filled with people... it was beautiful at Christmas and they would have parades ...it is a BIGpart of my childhood, both parents grew up there and many of my family is still there today. My Mom's father (my grandfather) was a coal miner and my Dads father (My grandfather) worked for NCR National Cash Register down near the ACME..they had both retired when I was young.
