Lately
Last month I got an IUD, and let’s just say my doctor was a bit optimistic when she said the cramping would last less than a day. Maybe a lot optimistic. Though I’m much better and I’m going to give it another couple of weeks before rendering a final verdict on the whole thing, this put me in no mood for anything, let alone writing. I’ve also felt like making bigger strides in my tech business and my other blog has become pretty time consuming as well.
The twinz had a good Easter, but I will say this: I am done with local egg hunts. Every year we’ve tried a different one in hopes that we might find one where the parents don’t ruin the whole thing–you know, by running onto the field in a frenzy with their rugrats and swiping as many eggs as they can for them, shoving everyone (including other tiny participants) out of their way. We tried Santa Maria this year, and I had high hopes because the postcard I got from the Santa Maria Children’s Museum said in big CAPITAL LETTERS that PARENTS were NOT to interfere in the hunt, that it was CHILDEN’S EVENT. Great!, I thought. They’re on notice. Maybe everybody will behave. Ha ha ha. No. Even a lady shouting for everybody to cool it during the event did nothing.
Lord, if I were this Easter Bunny, the first people I’d go after is those moronic parents.
So I staged a hunt of our own at the community garden. Took me about 15 or 20 minutes to hide a whole Trader Joe’s bagful of eggs, and I thought it would take at least that long for the girls to find them all. In reality, I’d say they covered it all in about 5. Maybe less. Apparently, brightly-colored sugar is extremely motivating. Who knew?
Went to the Flickr party in San Francisco on the 15th. Tried to get Bruce interested in coming, but he politely deferred, saying he had about as much interest in that as my going to a professional soccer game (which he did last month, with someone else–*yawn*). So I went alone and had a pretty good time. It was very meta, as they say in the valley: everybody taking pictures of people taking pictures of pictures. Lots of lenses poking strangers in the back. And for once, the parking gods smiled on me–I got a spot DIRECTLY in front of the club. This not only enabled me to run in and out for different cameras easily, but it allowed me an extra t-shirt run for emdot. Like last year, the food was wonderful, and you got tickets for two free drinks at the bar (I managed half a beer). It was also very crowded. It wasn’t too bad in the beginning but by 8:30 I couldn’t take it anymore and headed back to the hotel. The crowd made it easy to get lost though, which is exactly what I did when I guy started chatting me up in a way I perceived at the time as maybe a little too friendly. (I don’t wear a wedding ring because rings bug the crap out of me). I was making a concerted effort at downing a beer at the time so maybe he was just bored or being nice, I don’t know. Oh, and the music: it was awesome. The DJ was actually multi-talented Flickr staffer Scott Schiller. If you’re interested in listening to some of the sounds of the evening he has a mix from which some songs were pulled here (right-click to save). I’m especially smitten with the song that starts a little after the 66-minute mark.
The Flickr Turns 4 Party set is here. Also had some fun trying out my $5 DIY remote by the Bay Bridge.
Also? We were gone four days and bunny didn’t destroy a damn thing. The house was exactly as we left it, and I don’t know which is the bigger miracle, that or getting a parking spot in San Francisco.
