what IS that Totoro creature? Is it kids' anime? I've never heard of it. Though when I was their age, Captain Kangaroo and Sesame Street gave me horrible nightmares. Pediatrician ordered no more in our house.

She'll be okay, poor thing. A little extra reminding of how safe she is with you will get her feeling more secure.

I LOVE that you sent Bruce payment via Palpal. It's like you guys are independent shopkeepers instead of, you know, hitched. teehee.

Speaking of nightmares, your last email has given me some - haha, in a good way I guess because I realize how well-off I am compared to the example you cited. I'm composing an email back to you in my head, it just hasn't quite made it to the keyboard yet.

Damn... so many subjects for such a quick post. Here are my replies in order of their appearance in your blog.

1. Crap Totoro gave ME nightmares... ah, nothing like a little anime to scar your children for life. At least now when she starts getting pierced at age 16, you will know why. :) (you know i am just kidding...)

2. You will almost always have to write script to limit different browser functionality. Welcome to the nightmare that is compatible webdesign (and why so many designers totally ignored every other browser when Micro$oft began to dominate)!

3. I just installed the most recent MT upgrade, along with the nofollow plugin and latest blacklist beta. Everything seems to be working fine so far. I figure that the nofollow tag can't really hurt much, and if it does, then I will just remove it later. Anything to remove commentspam (i am up to like 40 a week... and fortunately with the new MT, it doesn't get posted to the site).

4. There is a program called iEatBrainz for the Mac which helps re-tag your mislabeled songs. It sort of works, but it is better than nothing. There has got to be an equvalent for the PC... check it out. Also, the key to a happy music library is a well-maintained library. I am contantly fixing track names and rating songs. There are a bunch of apple scripts which help in the tag-fixing (taking out extra characters or splitting track/artist/title combinations)... really useful! But i don't think the PC has applescript, so you might be out of luck there.

Oh, and I still don't let iTunes manage my music files either. I am pushing 30,000 songs on my drive right now... I just don' trust the machine enough just yet. :) ...and that is from a diehard future-loving, technologist too! Damn.

We've had nightmare problems, although not related to Totoro. We put on a CD -- something soothing, classical or new age -- as the bedtime ritual begins, through the bath, jammies, stories, etc., and program the player to keep repeating the CD for an hour or two after John falls asleep.

It seems to work -- it was suggested to us by Helen, the 87-year-old who runs around with me terrorizing produce boys everywhere.

She says small children need something to calm and soothe them as they go into sleep because they get so wound up and play so hard that their brains keep churning, and the music just helps them slow down and completely relax.
